Y-DNA genealogical database for Friesland?

Bericht door Aaron » dinsdag 24 sep 2013 3:05 pm

Is there a Y-DNA (patrilineal ancestry) database for Friesland?

I am trying to identify the paternal family of my great-grandfather (direct male line) who was born in Haskerland in 1871.

You might want to check the following Internet sites:

http://www.khazaria.com/genetics/frisians.html

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/fri ... n=yresults

FamilyTree DNA has the largest database and a Y-DNA test is available for USD 169. Submit a request to join the above Friese Wadden Project and compare your own FamilyTree DNA results with those of others who have used FamilyTree DNA.

For more information, contact one of the Project Administrators:

Thank you.
The Family Tree DNA site does seem to a good selection of Frisian families.

I had a Y-DNA46 test done last year through ancestry.com, although that one seems to cater mostly people of British ancestry so was of no use in finding matches for my Frisian ancestry.
It appears I can transfer my existing test directly to the site you listed for a small fee rather than having to purchase a new test which is good.

Each DNA laboratory uses their own methods. Your results from Ancestry will not be fully identical to your results from Familytree DNA.
Therefore, if you wish to use their database, you will have to get another test.

I found the information on transferring results on the Family Tree DNA FAQ page. The transfer only costs $19 or $58 transfer and testing 4 different markers to match their standard test perfectly.

I might just do the transfer at this stage and upgrade later if any matches there do look promising.

Yes, that sounds like the right decision. Sorry I forgot to mention that. If you already have your results and decide to use a different laboratory, you only need to make a few adjustments to some of the markers, thus no need to take a whole new test.

Surprisingly the DNA test you recommended was actually successful! I managed to identify the father of my patrilineal ancestor Anne Atsma (illegitimate son of Antje Atsma) of Haskerland. She had a relationship with her own stepfather (her mother's young husband) Jetze Schaafsma. A very distant Schaafsma-surnamed cousin had a similar DNA test and our patrilineal ancestries converge 6 generations ago with Jetze's grandfather.

Yes, I did add my results to the project. Anne Atsma is grouped under R1b1a2a1a1b, 5th from the bottom of the list. I will add the Schaafsma surname in as well since I now know more of the patrilineal lineage.
